All about our skin
The human skin is made up of an outer layer, the epidermis, followed by a layer called the dermis, then the hypodermis, that is also known as subcutaneous fat. The epidermis is made up mostly of cells forming the exterior of skin, growing outwards and constantly flaking off as new cells grow. Cells come from the tough protein Keratin, the substance from which our hair and nails are also derived. The skin is the body’s barrier and protector, as it consists of oil glands, sweat glands, nerves, hair follicles and blood vessels.
Keeping skin looking young and healthy is certainly one of our most prominent priorities.
Smoking, besides being a bad habit, does a lot of damage to the skin. It decreases the blood flow by narrowing the tiny blood vessels of the skin’s outer layers This takes out a supply of the skin’s oxygen and important nutrients. Furthermore, smoking promotes early wrinkles and aging, by damaging collagen, and elastin, the skin’s strength and elasticity.
