Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, (HBOT), is used as an additional treatment for the slow healing of many medical conditions, such as heart, lung, blood vessels, cancer care or wounds caused by radiation or by diabetes. HBOT is commonly used as emergency treatment for diver decompression,(The bends), and has become an asset for athletic recovery treatment as well. The claim is that while in a sealed chamber and breathing pure oxygen at high pressure for an extensive period, aids the musculoskeletal recovery and healing of sports injuries.

dissolvedoxygenHow hyperbaric oxygen therapy works

During the time a person is in a tube, pressurized room, or hyperbaric oxygen chamber, the air pressure is increased to three times higher than it is through normal air pressure. This allows the lungs to amass more oxygen than breathing pure oxygen through normal air pressure. The extra oxygen gathered is then circulated by the blood throughout the body, helping to fight bacteria, as well as stimulating growth factors, and stem cells that promote healing.

What is the importance of hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

The body’s tissues need adequate oxygen supply in order to function. When a tissue is injured, the need to survive requires more oxygen than the usual supply. With hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the amount of oxygen increases for the blood to carry. This increase of blood oxygen restores the levels of blood gases and tissue function for fighting infection and promoting healing.

HBOT is used for the following conditions

  • Carbon Monoxide poisoning
  • Gangrene
  • Decompression
  • Burns
  • Severe anaemia
  • Brain abscess
  • Non-healing wounds such as a diabetic foot ulcer
  • Skin or bone infection causing tissue death
  • Sudden vision loss
  • Radiation injury

Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy has also been proven to assist conditions of the following:

  • Gastrointestinal ulcers
  • Cirrhosis
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Depression
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Cancer
  • Autism
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Migraine
  • Heatstroke
  • Multiple sclerosis

Phiten, through their research and technological laboratories, has introduced Hyperbaric Air Therapy chambers comfortable to use in your own home, or portable for taking along with you when travelling. It is designed for comfort and complete relaxation. The Phiten HBAT is made of aluminium and polycarbonate panels with outer coverings of soft artificial leather and with a pressurization program that is excellently timed. The covers of the mattress and pillow in the chamber are permeated with X30 Aquatitan, and the micro titanium pillow is formulated to relieve any stiffness of the neck or shoulders.

It comes complete with easy-to-use display and programming, makes a simple and safe customization of the session for enjoyment and the full benefit of the hyperbaric air therapy.

Risks are rare

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy complications are rare and it is considered as a safe procedure. The potential risks as described by the Mayo Clinic, are temporary myopia, middle ear injuries from increased air pressure, lung collapse from air pressure change, or seizures resulting from too much oxygen.
